Vietnam, U.S. hold deputy defense minister-level phone talk
PANO - Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, Deputy Minister of the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense, held a phone talk with David F. Helvey, Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense of the U.S., on July 1.
At the talk, the two sides informed each other about their COVID-19 prevention and control situations, shared difficulties confronting them, and consented to continue bolstering their cooperation in this field.

General Vinh briefed the U.S. side on the activities in military-defense cooperation between ASEAN member states and partner countries including the U.S. as well as on ministerial-level meetings and other meetings hosted by Vietnam.
The U.S. side spoke highly of the adjustment of the agenda by Vietnam during its ASEAN Chairmanship Year and voiced its support for the activities of the regional bloc in general and Vietnam’s initiatives in particular.
Regarding the bilateral ties, both sides reviewed the outcomes of their cooperation recently, especially in dealing with war aftermaths. They agreed to step up cooperation areas in line with the common relationship, with priority given to settlement of war consequences and the United Nations peacekeeping missions.

They also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual concern and reached a consensus that adherence to international law in settling disputes is an important measure, contributing to trust building, peace, stability, and common development of the region and the world.
Prior to the phone talk, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh hosted a reception for U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel J. Kritenbrink.
