At the event, Gen. Chien and the Italian Undersecretary of State for Defense reviewed the implementation of cooperation in many fields, in the framework of the memorandum of understanding on defense cooperation signed in 2013 as well as cooperation results since the third Defense Policy Dialogue held in Hanoi in 2019.

Accordingly, both sides agreed that there is ample room for the bilateral defense relations, and mapped out orientations to boost cooperation in other potential fields, focusing on delegation exchange, training work to raise troops’ capability, cooperation in defense industry and technology transfer for the production of dual-use products, sharing experience in U.N. peacekeeping operations, overcoming war aftermath, among others.

For his part, Italian Undersecretary of State for Defense Matteo Perego Cremnago acknowledged Vietnam’s initiatives, affirming Italy’s willingness to support the Vietnam People’s Army to raise troops’ competence. He also emphasized that both sides should practically and effectively beef up bilateral defense cooperation via the deputy ministerial-level Defense Policy Dialogue mechanism.

The two sides also discussed international and regional issues of mutual concern, affirming the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, including maritime security, agreed on peaceful settlement of international issues and disputes, as well as the observance of international laws and the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982.

Earlier, Gen. Chien and the delegation paid a courtesy call on Italian Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto. At the reception, both sides agreed to assign functional organs of the two defense ministries to finalize the legal basis for bilateral defense cooperation in general, and cooperation in U.N. peacekeeping operations, overcoming war aftermath, and cyber security in particular.

On the same day, the delegation of the Vietnamese Defense Ministry had meetings with Italian Admiral Luciano Portolano, Secretary General of Defense and National Armaments Director; representatives from the Italian Industries Federation of Aerospace, Defense and Security (AIAD); and the Vietnamese Embassy to Italy.
