At the meeting, Colonel Tran Nam Trung, Chief of the Dien Bien provincial Border Guard Command briefed the guests on the command’s outcomes in border management and protection, maintenance of local security and order, as well as immigration control over the past time.

According to Trung, the local border guard force is entrusted to manage and protect more than 455km of borderline which Vietnam shares with Laos and China. The locality has 29 border communes with 111 villages populated by 25,801 households from 16 ethnic minority groups.

Over the past years, Dien Bien's border guard force has paid due attention to firmly safeguarding national sovereignty and security over national border and maintaining political security, social order and safety in border areas.

Attentively, since the beginning of this year, local border guards have smashed 149 drug-related cases, arrested 178 drug-smuggling suspects, and seized 15.516kg of heroin, 426,758 meth pills, 10.167kg of opium and other related substances. They have also seriously observed the Government’s direction on COVID-19 prevention and control along the borderline and handled immigration violations in a timely manner.

During the meeting, foreign defense attachés and Dien Bien provincial border guard force talked about the control of illegal immigration across borderline amid the complicated developments of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the drug-crime prevention and control work.

They also discussed the coordination between the local border guard force and the border protection forces of Laos and China to ensure a borderline of peace, friendship, and development.
