ADSOM Working Group convenes

The Vietnamese delegation to the meeting was led by Lieutenant General Vu Chien Thang, Director of Foreign Relations under the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense and Head of Vietnam’s ADSOM WG.

This meeting of the ADSOM WG is among the first ASEAN-led defense-military meetings and related activities hosted by the Bruneian Ministry of National Defense during its 2021 ASEAN Chair Year.

At the meeting, delegates discussed the draft joint statements of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and ADMM Plus. They also reviewed the realization of ADMM’s initiatives and discussed new initiatives as well.

Other discussions at the event included preparations for the ASEAN Defense Senior Officials’ Meeting and ADSOM Plus, ADMM, and ADMM+, and proposals to ASEAN partners on an informal meeting between Defense Ministers of ASEAN member states and the bloc’s partners, as well as the ASEAN - Russia naval exercise.

Delegates at the event

In his speech, the Vietnamese head delegate informed other delegates of a workshop to develop rules of reference to implement Vietnam’s initiative on flying the ASEAN flag beside the flags of ASEAN member states at the UN peacekeeping mission. The initiative was approved at the 14th ADMM in December 2020 during Vietnam’s ASEAN Chair Year in 2020.
