Before the 58th Series of Meetings of the WIPO Assemblies, which opened in Geneva, Switzerland on September 24, WIPO Director General Francis Gurry announced the death of the Vietnamese head of State and extended deep condolences to the bereaved family, and the Government and people of Vietnam.

He recalled his meeting with President Tran Dai Quang in March 2017 during his trip to Vietnam. At the meeting, the President vowed to create optimal conditions for the growth of the intellectual property system, which contributes to Vietnam’s socio-economic development.

Ambassador Duong Chi Dung, head of Vietnam’s permanent mission to the United Nations, other international organizations in Geneva and Chairman of the WIPO Assemblies for 2018-2019, expressed thanks to international friends for their condolences over the passing away of President Tran Dai Quang.

In their speeches, delegates of WIPO Assemblies expressed their profound condolences to the Government and people of Vietnam on the President’s passing.

President Tran Dai Quang passed away at 10:05am on September 21 in Hanoi at the age of 62 due to serious illness. He was elected State President at the 11th session of the 13th National Assembly on April 2, 2016.
