Speaking at the workshop, Vietnam’s Deputy Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung affirmed that with the consistent policy of protecting and promoting human rights, Vietnam has attached great importance to and fully participated in the UPR mechanism from the first cycle in 2009.
He asserted that the implementation of UPR recommendations has brought encouraging results in Vietnam, including completing legal regulations on human rights, ensuring social welfare, and improving people’s life.
The nation’s experience in effectively joining the UPR mechanism was also appreciated by the international community, especially the issuance of comprehensive plans to follow recommendations throughout the cycles, he added.
UNDP Resident Representative in Vietnam Caitlin Wiesen stressed that Vietnam has made very good progress in human rights promotion and protection through the ratification of major international human rights treaties. These developments were recognized and welcomed by other states in the UPR mechanism.
The U.N. representative emphasized the significance of raising public awareness of human rights, suggesting that the country should propose integrating contents of sustainable development, protection of vulnerable groups and public empowerment in the work.
