In an interview with the press after the Ambassador Nguyen Hong Thao was re-elected to the ILC, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son highlighted the significance of the event.

Mr. Son said that realizing the Party’s and State’s policy of promoting multilateral diplomacy, Vietnam has not only successfully performed important duties as ASEAN Chair 2020 and a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2020-2021, but also actively and proactively sent officers to work in prestigious international organizations.

Therefore, Ambassador Thao’s re-election to the ILC was a testament to the sound policy of the Party and the State on comprehensively, creatively, and effectively carrying out external activities, enhancing multilateral diplomacy, and deepening the relations with other partners in the world.

The Vietnamese diplomat added that Vietnam’s continued participation in the ILC, an agency specializing in developing and codifying international law, demonstrates a strong shift in the country's international integration which is to actively contribute to building international law together with the international community for a world of peace, national independence, democracy, respect of international law, development cooperation and social progress.

Moreover, it manifests the maturity of Vietnam’s multilateral diplomacy, the international community’s trust in the country’s persistent efforts and active and responsible contribution to the U.N. and multilateral institutions. It also affirms increasing ability and expertise of Vietnamese diplomatic officials, gradually meeting regional and global standards.

Foreign Minister Son stressed that Ambassador Thao’s re-election to the ILC is the international recognition of the ambassador’s expertise, capability, experience and active contribution to important international law issues during his 2017-2022 working tenure in the ILC.

According to Foreign Minister Son, apart from the ILC, Vietnam has been actively bidding for seats in important international organizations and institutions such as the UNESCO Executive Board for the 2021-2024 term, the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage for the 2022-2026 term, the World Heritage Committee for the 2023-2027 term, and the U.N. Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term.

He also expressed his belief that Ambassador Nguyen Hong Thao will make active and effective contributions to the ILC, thereby enhancing the protection of Vietnam's legitimate rights and interests, strengthening the role and voice of developing countries, and continuing to clearly affirm that Vietnam is a friend, a reliable partner and an active and responsible member in the international community, deserving the trust of nations and international community.

Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Hong Thao was re-elected to the International Law Commission for the 2023-2027 tenure with 145 out of 191 votes, ranking fourth among 11 candidates from Asia-Pacific, after India, Thailand, and Japan. The vote was conducted on November 12 in the framework of the 76th session of the U.N. General Assembly to select 34 members for the ILC.
