Construction of the public sanitation and laundry area in Abyei

Abyei townlet is home to more than 50,000 people, with flat terrain and almost no drainage system. Many low-lying areas become waterlogged during the rainy season. The environment is severely polluted due to waste from daily activities and dead animals.

Some "ponds" contain small amounts of water; however, they are the main source of water for people to bathe and wash and are also the main source of water for livestock. Among them is a public sanitation and community bathing and washing area, located about 500 meters Northwest of the main gate of the UNISFA mission.

After working with the Civil-Military Coordination (CIMIC) of the mission and conducting a site survey with the local government to select a location for soil collection, the Engineering Company Rotation 3 prepared personnel and vehicles to transport over 250m3 of soil to dig trenches and raise the ground to make a yard, with a total area of nearly 1,000m2 for the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth, and Sports.

This is a significant activity to prevent flooding during the rainy season and create conditions for the ministry to hold important events and community activities.

Bol Aguer Koch, Minister of Information, Culture, Youth, and Sports, expressed sincere thanks to Vietnam for helping repair and make a yard in this area. This is a place where they often receive government officials at all levels for visits and work, as well as organize events and community activities.

The Engineering Company Rotation 3 continued to deploy personnel and vehicles to transport more than 3,000m3 of soil to level and raise the foundation of about 500m2 of the yard, along with 2km of the road leading to the public sanitation and laundry area of Abyei.

To effectively carry out activities supporting local people in Abyei, the Vietnamese Engineering Company applied suitable approaches to gain the support of local people and authorities, arranging reasonable schedules and mainly working on weekends.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Pham Van Hao, Head of the Engineering Company Rotation 3, over the past time, the unit has overcome difficulties and enhanced solidarity to accomplish all assigned missions.

The unit has implemented many practical methods to support local people, leaving a good impression on the authorities and people in Abyei.
