Cai Lan Oil and Fats Industrial Co. (Calofic) opened the country’s largest cooking oil processing plant in Ho Chi Minh City on June 9 at a cost of 34 million USD.
The plant in Hiep Phuoc Industrial Park, which can produce 600 metric tonnes of refined oils a day, is the Quang Ninh province-based company’s third in the country.
Do Ngoc Hai, general director of Vocarimex – the local partner of Cai Lan joint venture company, said the new facility took Calofic’s total production to 1,150 tonnes per day.
”The new factory hopes to meet the rising demand for cooking oil in the local market, especially in the south, as well as overseas markets like Cambodia, China, Japan, Laos and the Republic of Korea,” said Hai.
Established in 1996, Calofic is a 68/32 joint venture between Siteki Investment Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary of Kuok Oils and Grain Ltd. of Singapore, and the Ministry of Industry’s Viet Nam Vegetable Oils, Aromas and Cosmetic Corp. (Vocarimex).
Hai added Calofic’s investment in Viet Nam had risen to 83.4 million USD since it opened its first plant 11 years ago.
Speaking at the inauguration on June 9, Deputy Minister of Industry Chau Hue Cam said the company had a 35 percent share in the country’s cooking oil market last year.
