PANO - Khai Doan, an overseas Vietnamese in Germany, will exhibit his own 30 lacquer paintings titled “Dipolar” (two poles) at the Goethe Institute in Hanoi tomorrow.

Khai Doan’s art reflects the productive tension between different poles of an ambivalent mixture of Vietnamese tradition and the fast-paced world of advertising.

The artist combines contrasts of near and far, young and old, familiar and strange, concrete and abstract to consistently implement his concept of contradiction through lacquer painting technique, and the repeated application and sanding of colours.

Khai Doan has been a director in the advertising industry, both in Germany and in Vietnam.

His paintings would be a clear evidence of his love for the traditional lacquer techniques of Vietnam, as a way to preserve and popularize such an art.

During his month-long exhibition Khai Doan will have a talk with art-lovers on May 14th and organise an art performance as well.
