Professor John Balaban gave a talk on the poetry of Ho Xuan Huong in New York on September 26.
Professor Balaban is a poet who has been nominated for the US National Book Awards. He was previously the president of the American Literary Translators Association and is now president of the Vietnamese Nom Preservation Foundation in the US.
He spent most of his time in 1971-1972 southern Vietnam provinces collecting folk songs. He has published 11 collections of poetry and literature, some of them winners of prestigious the US literary prizes.
He is also a translator of Vietnamese poetry. His books on Vietnam include Ca dao Vietnam: a Bilingual Anthology of Vietnamese Folk Poetry, Vietnam: the Land We Never Knew, Vietnam: A Traveler’s Literary Companion and the Poetry of Ho Xuan Huong.
