Speaking at the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Hoang Vinh Bao said Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc issued Decision No.284/QD-TTg on February 24, 2014 designating April 21 as Vietnam Book Day in order to encourage reading culture among the public.

During the five-day festival, an exhibition will be held featuring artifacts and images of ancient books made from a variety of materials.

A seminar on developing a reading campaign as well as a national conference reviewing the five-year implementation of the PM’s decision on Vietnam Book Day are also planned as part of the framework.

Ministries, agencies, and localities have also been launching activities to celebrate books and literature, taking place during April 1-May 1.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism held the sixth Vietnam Book Day at the National Library and community-based libraries nationwide. The Ministry of Education and Training organized activities in schools, while the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Public Security, the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women’s Union also responded to the event.
