PANO - The cycling tournament “To Dien Bien Phu”- the People’s Army Newspaper (PAN) Cup, a political-social activity to mark the 60th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory ended on May 6th in Dien Bien Phu city.

On the previous day, May 5th, 110 cyclists competed in the fifth stage from Tuan Giao to Dien Bien Phu city with seething encouragement from local people, the important factor for the athletes to complete the race through steep slopes and mountainous passes.
Rider Pham Thi Kim Loan from Co May Dong Thap 1 ranked the first in the women’s race with the record of two hours and 17 minutes. She was followed by Nguyen Thi That and Phan Thi Lieu from An Giang Plant Protection Joint-stock Company (AGPPS) team.
Meanwhile, the men’s race from Thuan Chau town, Son La province to Dien Bien Phu city saw tough competition among cyclists from Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Thap, Malaysia and Japan. With good performance of three hours, 15 minutes and five seconds, athlete Dainan from Malaysia ranked the first. Second and third positions belonged to Axo from Japan’s Bonne Chace team and Huynh Mai Duy from SunTek Sao Vietnam team, respectively.
Accordingly, after the five stages, cyclist Nguyen Thi That successfully won tournament’s Yellow jersey of women’s category with impressive performance of eight hours, 55 minutes and 35 seconds while Nguyen Phan Ngoc Trang and Cam Thi Cam Le from Binh Duong Water Supply-Sewerage Environment Co., Ltd ranked second and third. In the men’s race, rider Nguyen Tan Hoai from Domesco Dong Thap 1 team held first position, followed by Axo from Japan’s team and Nguyen Truong Tai from Domesco Dong Thap 1.

Domesco Dong Thap 1 team won the group’s prize with the performance of 33 hours, 25 minutes and 6 seconds, followed by SunTek Sao Viet and ADC-Vinh Long Television 1 teams. Meanwhile, Binh Duong Water Supply Sewerage Environment Co., Ltd (BIWASE) bagged the prize in women’s category with performance of 26 hours, 48 minutes and 31 seconds. Second and third positions belonged to Co May Dong Thap 2 and An Giang Plant Protection Joint-stock Company (AGPPS) teams, respectively.
This is the third time that the People’s Army Newspaper, the Vietnam Motor-Bicycle Sports Federation and the Sports General Department opened such an open cycling tournament.
Cyclists pedaled through six stages for a total of over 550km from Hanoi to Dien Bien Phu city, passing by many Dien Bien Phu Campaign-related historical places, such as Road 6, Moc Chau, Pha Din mountain pass and Tuan Giao.
During the tournament, organizers presented gifts to war veterans, policy beneficiaries and scholarships to children of troops of Dien Bien provincial armed forces.
