PANO – The Asian Taekwondo Poomsae Championships 2012 ended at the Phu Tho Sporting Hall in HCMC on May 11th.
At the final match of the event, Vietnamese fighter Nguyen Trong Cuong won the first gold medal for the Vietnam team, whereas during the two-day competition, Vietnamese athletes only gained one silver and two bronze medals.
In the men’s 87kg category, as his rivals in the qualifying round and semi-final dropped out, Trong Cuong advanced to the final round to take on Baykuziyev Jasur (Uzbekistan). At this match, Cuong beat Jasur with a score of 5-4 by the law “Sudden Death” (similar to a “golden goal” in football).
Earlier, at the Asian Taekwondo Poomsae Tournament for young fighters, the Vietnam team only won five bronze medals and was ranked 10th out of 35.
