At the eighth political consultation between the Vietnamese and Lao Ministries of Foreign Affairs

Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet and his Lao counterpart Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune co-chaired the event.

At the meeting, the two sides reviewed the relations between Vietnam and Laos, exchanged views on regional and international issues of common concern.

The two deputy ministers agreed that in the context of the complicated and unpredictable developments in the region and the world, the two sides should promote their traditions of close coordination and mutual support at regional and international forums, particularly the U.N., ASEAN, and other sub-region cooperation mechanisms, especially in strategic issues related to peace and stability in the region.

Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet confirmed that Vietnam will work closely with and give all possible support to Laos to help the country perform its role as the ASEAN Chair 2024, contributing to maintaining ASEAN’s unity and centrality.

Regarding the East Sea (South China Sea) issue, both officials pledged to join other ASEAN member states to maintain ASEAN’s common stance on the East Sea issue, settling disputes by peaceful means, respecting international laws and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982; effectively implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC); and strive to soon reach an effective and efficient Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).
