Talking to the press on the future of the 71-year-old airline, PM Mahathir Mohamad said the Malaysian government is studying options for the national carrier, stressing that it is a very serious matter to shut down the airline.

He said a decision should be made soon.

Following two disasters in 2014 when flight MH370 disappeared and flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine, Malaysia Airlines was taken private by sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional Bhd, which undertook some major reforms.

However, the airline still struggled financially and it was said to be accounted for half of the whopping 7.3 billion RM losses of Khazanah Nasional Bhd last year.
