Central Quang Nam province aims to develop Cu Lao Cham (Cham islands) into a tourism and service area, helping to create a new perspective and character for Hoi An tourism.

At a seminar to develop Cu Lao Cham into a marinereserve on October 23, the Quang Nam People’s Committee will set up an inter-sector working group to devise a plan to sustainably protect the biological resources and environment of Cu Lao Cham as well as socio-economic development for the local community.

The Cu Lao Cham marinereserve, 17km offshore from Hoi An ancient town, has a surface sea area of 230 square metres and 7 islets. Local people have a close relation with the sea and forests.

Quang Nam local authorities underlined that developing Cu Lao Cham must be based on socio-economic development in the locality and sustainable use of natural resources.

Earlier, scientists from UNESCO and Man and Biosphere Vietnam (MAB Vietnam) and leaders of Quang Nam People’s Committee and Hoi An town had prepared a file for recognition of the 40,000-ha Cu Lao Cham – Hoi An World Biosphere Reserve.
