French newspaper names Vietnam’s eight must-try dishes
PANO –Le Figaro, one of the oldest newspapers of France, has ran an article, titled “In Vietnam, eight wonders to taste in Hanoi – a temple of street food,” introducing Hanoi’s most popular street food.
The first must-try dish in Vietnam is Pho which is made with rice noodles, warming broth, and chicken or beef and served with sauces, herbs, and spices. Pho originated in the 20th century in Northern Vietnam and has been popularized throughout the country and the world by the Vietnamese people.
Bun cha is another favorite dish in Hanoi. It is a mix of grilled pork, noodles, dipping sauce (consisting of fish sauce, sugar, lemon juice, water, garlic and chili), and fresh herbs. On his arrival in Vietnam in 2016, President Obama and chef Anthony Bourdain had the dish at a Bun Cha restaurant in Hanoi.
The newspaper also recommends tourists to try Bun rieu cua when visiting Vietnam. The broth is cooked from crab roe and tomato. Bun rieu cua is usually served with beef or pork, grilled tofu, and herbs.

Other must-taste dishes picked up by the newspaper include banh cuon (rolled rice pancakes), banh mi (Vietnamese baguettes), banh goi (fried donuts), cha ca (fried fish), and ca phe trung (egg coffee).
Together with main ingredients of the dishes, the article also lists renowned addresses for each dish and advised tourists to try the dishes in street food stalls rather than have them in restaurants. Street food stalls are thought to preserve specialties of the city.
