Veteran Han engaged in the combat to protect the Northern border of the country between 1985 and 1987. After being discharged from the military, he returned to his hometown. Despite his hard work and different jobs, his family still lived in hard conditions. To escape poverty, the Uncle Ho’s soldier himself learnt to develop economy.

In 2023, his family received VND 60 million from the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction to buy three breeding cows. With good care, the cows have given birth to two calves.

Last year, his family was chosen to get a preferential loan of VND 30 million to develop household garden economy. With this amount of money, he invested in re-planning the livestock barn system, selecting breeds and seeds to be suitable for local land and soil conditions.

Also in 2024, his family was lucky to receive a VND 70 million support for needy veterans to eliminate temporary houses. He used the support and his family’s savings to build a new, spacious, and strong house and put into use in this lunar Year of the Snake.

With support from the Party, State, local authorities, his family no longer live in a temporary house and has capital to develop economy. Though still facing difficulties, he felt luckier than other families who have been affected by natural disasters or whose members suffer from serious illnesses. Therefore, he decided to write a petition to not be listed as poor so that the Party and State’s support could reach other disadvantaged households.

Secretary of the Party cell of Doi 5 village Nguyen Xuan Xuyen said that in 2024, many households in the village wrote petitions to ask for not being listed as poor. Han’s family was the first to do so, inspiring others to follow.

Veteran Han keeps working to contribute to local economic development.

Chairwoman of Ngoc Linh commune’s People Committee Nguyen Thi Lien said that the commune always considers sustainable poverty reduction one of its key tasks. Thus it has effectively carried out programs, such as building new rural roads and houses, creating conditions for locals to develop economy.

Despite his old age, veteran Luong Cong Han still works hard to increase his family's income and contribute to the local economic development. His petition has truly become a message, strongly spreading the spirit of being a role model, driving ethnic people in mountainous provinces like Ha Giang to escape poverty.
