Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Pham Hung Tam (second from right) meets with Acting Deputy Secretary of the Higher Education, Research and International Group in the Australian Government Department of Education Karen Sandercock (third from right) at the Vietnamese Embassy in Canberra.

At a meeting with Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Pham Hung Tam at the Vietnamese Embassy in Canberra on October 2, Sandercock spoke highly of the outcomes of bilateral education cooperation and appreciated the embassy’s support in advancing education ties, including the operation of RMIT University in Vietnam.

She updated on Australia’s new policies for international students, highlighting the Government’s plan to raise enrolment quotas by 250,000 in 2026, and announced that Minister for Education Jason Clare will visit Vietnam in late 2025 to strengthen collaboration in higher education, vocational training, and transnational education models.

Tam reaffirmed that education and training has always been one of the six pillars of bilateral cooperation since the two countries elevated relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2024. He noted that education was also a prominent focus during the recent visit of Australian Governor-General Sam Mostyn to Vietnam.

The diplomat also informed Sandercock about the Politburo’s new policy directions, including Resolution No.57 on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation, and Resolution No. 71 on advancing education and training. He expressed hope that the two countries will make new strides in cooperation, particularly in science, technology, and human resource development.
