According to the plan, the ministry targets to upgrade seven existing railway lines by 2030 and build nine ones with a length of 2,362km. With the construction of new lines, Vietnam is expected to have 25 railway lines with the total length of 6,354km.

According to Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The, railway planning is the third project approved by the Prime Minister, after road and seaport planning projects.

Regarding the construction of the North-South high-speed railway, The said that from now to 2030, the plan will prioritize the construction of Hanoi - Vinh and Nha Trang - Ho Chi Minh City railway lines.

The official also announced a plan on investing in building a railway connecting with China, Laos and Cambodia, in which the first investment package is for the construction of a railway line connecting Lao Cai station with Hekou Bei station (China) to facilitate transport of goods from Vietnam to Europe.

Along with that, the ministry also invests in railways connecting seaports and airports.
