The Vietnam national strategy to respond to climate change provides a strong foundation for formulating long-term socio-economic development plans.
Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Minh Quang made the statement at a meeting in Hanoi on March 7 to launch a “National climate change strategy” (NCCS) and “climate change and sea level rise scenario for Vietnam”.
The strategy will enable Vietnam to develop and replicate on a trial basis a community-based climate change adaptation model.
Vietnam is among the countries most seriously affected by climate change, and the Mekong Delta is one of the three most vulnerable deltas world-wide to rising sea level.
The strategy outlines overall objectives, prioritized projects to be implemented in 2011-2015, and plans for 2016-2025 as well as objectives for 2050, with a vision to 2100. It also identifies strategic tasks to cope with global climate change.
The climate change and sea level rise scenario for Vietnam was based on estimates of greenhouse gas emissions, in order to develop and implement action plans by ministries, departments and localities to minimize the impact of climate change.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will organize an investment conference and call on foreign businesses to invest in infrastructure projects in the field of climate change adaptation.
