National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong has called for continued renewal in the organisation of meetings between local People’s Councils and people and voters to better settle their petitions.

“Such meetings should be expanded, focusing on topics of voter concern and with the participation of representatives of mass organisations,” said Mr Trong at a conference in Hanoi on June 2, attracting representatives of the People’s Councils from seven northern provinces.

“Local People’s Councils should increase the quality and efficiency of such meetings to better settle people and voters’ complaints and denunciations, alongside administrative affairs,” said Mr Trong.

Delegates shared the view that positive results have been achieved in receiving and settling people and voters’ complaints in recent times, thereby reducing pro-longed petitions. Most cities and provinces made public schedules of regular meetings with people by deputies of local People’s Councils. They also invited representatives from local administrations, relevant departments and mass organisations to these meetings.

However, the settlement of petitions failed to meet voters’ expectations. Information dissemination remained limited, and deputies of local People’s Councils did not frequently urge relevant agencies to give feedback.

Delegates proposed increasing the number of full-time deputies of local People’s Councils, diversifying meetings with people and voters, early issuing regulations on these meetings and keeping abreast of regular updates on legal amendments. They also proposed sanctions to be imposed on organisations and individuals that do not answer nor give feedback soon.
