The Hanoi People’s Council have unanimously agreed to adopt a resolution on the capital city’s administrative boundary readjustment project.

Under the resolution adopted on March 27, Hanoi’s boundary will include existing Hanoi city and the area and population of northern Ha Tay province.

The boundary will also be extended to Me Linh district of northern Vinh Phuc province and four communes of northern Hoa Binh province’s Luong Son district.

Once the project is approved by the National Assembly, Hanoi will cover almost 3,325 sq.km with a total population of almost 6 million people, 29 district and precinct administrative units and 575 communal, ward and town administrative units.

The new capital city will border Bac Ninh and Hung Yen provinces to the East, Hoa Binh and Phu Tho provinces to the West, Ha Nam province to the South and Thai Nguyen and Vinh Phuc provinces to the North.

Apart from Hanoi’s boundary expansion, a plan to create a capital region has been carried out by the Ministry of Construction to turn Hanoi into one of the 30 biggest cities in the world.

The capital region comprises Hanoi, as the centre, and seven surrounding provinces Ha Tay, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, Bac Ninh, Vinh Phuc, Ha Nam and Hoa Binh.

The region covers 13,000sq.km, accounting for 87 percent of the total area of the northern key economic region, with a population of more than 12 million people.

The Prime Minister has recently assigned Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai as Head of the Steering Board in charge of planning and investment in the capital region construction.
