Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tan at the seminar

Vietnam has a large potential to develop wind power at sea but it should focus on the development of wind power on land first, Nguyen Ngoc Tan, an expert in wind power from Germany, suggested.

At a seminar on wind power issues in Vietnam held on the afternoon of April 6th, the Vietnamese national said that the cost to build a wind power project at sea may be double that on land and that the construction and operation of a wind power project at sea are evidently riskier.

“Vietnam’s potential capacity of wind power at sea could double that on land but the country should implement on-land wind power projects at first to draw experiences and when it has enough knowledge, experience and expertise as well as money, it can build wind marine power farms,” said Tan on the sidelines of the seminar.

According to reports, Vietnam potential wind power mounts to 500,000 mW per year.

At this point, some 20 on-land wind power projects are implemented in the provinces of Binh Thuan, Ninh Thuan, Bac Lieu and Lam Dong, and a wind power farm at sea has been built in Bac Lieu.

Experts said that the development of wind power is a future direction to preserve environment and nature, which governments should invest more in rather than hydro- and/or thermo-power projects.
