Defense ministry takes urgent rescue missions in Central localities
PANO – The Ministry of National Defense held a conference on October 18 to discuss urgent measures to search and rescue the missing while ensuring safety for rescue troops and local people in Central localities.
General Ngo Xuan Lich, member of the Politburo, Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission and Minister of National Defense, chaired the event.
At the conference, delegates were briefed on the flooding situation in the Central localities in recent days, and possible complicated developments as forecasted in the coming time.
Speaking at the event, General Lich requested all military units stationed in the region to recheck their stations, barracks and facilities, and promptly evacuate troops and people to safer places amid the complicated developments of flooding.
Regarding to the 22 missing troops due to a large landslide that happened at the stationed location of Defense – Economic Unit 377 of Military Region 4, the defense minister asked the military region to collaborate with relevant agencies and local authorities to implement urgent measures to rescue victims while ensuring safety for the rescue forces.
He urged the General Staff and the General Department of Politics to quickly conduct search and rescue missions, ensure benefits for the officers who sacrificed themselves while doing their duties, and visit their families.
He also assigned the Department of Information and Political Education under the General Department of Politics to direct press agencies to regularly update information related to the flooding situation and the military rescue efforts.
