The event was part of the program “Coast guards accompany fishermen” in 2022 launched by Coast Guard Region 4.

Thach Quang Giang, captain of Ship ST-00735TS, is a fisherman from Vinh Quoi commune, Nga Nam town, Soc Trang province. Giang’s ship is operating in the area of Tho Chu Island, and it has not reached out to sea regularly since the beginning of 2021 due to the complicated developments of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Representatives of the Vietnam Coast Guard Command, the Coast Guard Region 4 Command, and the Kien Giang provincial Border Guard Command hand over the portraits of Uncle Ho, and medicines to fishermen on Tho Chu Island.

He is one among the local fishermen who have received gifts from troops of Coast Guard Region 4 on this occasion. He feels touched and happy when receiving the gifts from the coast guard region. He said that now he and other fishermen are able to reach out to sea thanks to the support of the coast guards.

Meanwhile, Head of the Kien Giang provincial Party Committee’s Mass Mobilization Commission Nguyen Van Phich said that the program “Coast guards accompany fishermen” shows the responsibility of coast guards towards local fishermen. It not only helps fishermen in fishing at sea but also supports needy ones on the mainland.

The program has contributed to developing socio-economy in the locality and building the posture of people’s heart at sea. The legal knowledge that the coast guards have provided for the fishermen will help implement the Government’s direction over combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, contributing to soon removing the European Commission (E.C.)’s “yellow card” on Vietnamese seafood exports, he added.

Senior Colonel Tran Van Luong, Acting Commander of Coast Guard Region 4, said that several activities within the framework of the program “Coast guards accompany fishermen” were halted in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the coast guard region has maintained regular and effective support for the fishermen in various forms, he added. Particularly, the unit has organized dozens of events to hand over 1,600 gifts to fishermen and 2,600 gifts to needy people. Through these activities, the coast guards have helped locals understand the significance of the sea and islands, thus enhancing their responsibilities in observing the law and protecting the national sovereignty over sea and islands.
