Deputy Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam Pham Thu Hang affirmed on December 10 in response to a reporter's question about Vietnam's comments on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of UNCLOS 1982.

She said that over the past 40 years, the Convention has always served as a comprehensive and complete international legal framework and a legal basis for all activities of management and use of sea and oceans.

As a responsible member of the international community and an active member of UNCLOS 1982, Vietnam always upholds principles, goals of the Convention, and strictly abides by, observe and implement it, persistently settle disputes at sea by peaceful means in accordance with international law; actively participate in and contribute many initiatives to activities within the framework of institutions established under the Convention, receiving recognition of the international community. At the same time, Vietnam has also enhanced the completion of the domestic legal system on the management and use of the sea in accordance with the Convention; promoted international cooperation at sea on the basis of the provisions of the Convention and the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals 2015.

On this occasion, Vietnam emphasized that countries need to continue to respect and fully implement their obligations as members of the UNCLOS 1982, work together, and make active and practical contribution to maintaining peace, stability, legal order at sea, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation, as well as promoting sustainable development of seas and oceans.
