The Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF) is doing its best to send more Vietnamese postgraduates to the United States to study under the VEF’s scholarship programme.

Representatives of the US Department of Education and Training and member of VEF’s Board Steven Pappas affirmed this at a press briefing in Ho Chi Minh City on August 8.

Since 2003, the VEF, a US Congressional initiative and US Government’s organisation, with 10 years of operating in Vietnam, has sent 423 Vietnamese research students to 84 leading US universities.

It has also brought 38 Vietnamese doctors to the US to attend post-doctor training courses and sponsored 22 US professors to give lectures in Vietnam.

Prof. Kenneth C. Burtis, a member of the US scientists and professors group, who is selecting local students for 45 VEF’s scholarships, said he believed that the VEF’s programme will make positive contributions to enhancing the US-Vietnam bilateral cooperation.

Prof. Edward R. Sheinerman, from Johns Hopkins University spoke highly of Vietnamese education, saying that Vietnam possesses plenty of gifted students, and some of them who experience hardship in life still obtain scholarships.

For her part, VEF’s Executive Director, PhD. Lynne McNamara expressed her pleasure at the fund’s contribution to Vietnam’s development in terms of science, mathematics, health and technology.

Another member of the VEF’s Board, David Duong also wishes to see the opening of a US university in Vietnam in the future.

Nguyen Thi Hien Luong, a scholarship receiver, valued the quality of US universities, adding that experiences she acquired from her university in the US have been very effective in helping her teaching at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology.
