EU supports Vietnam in controlling coastal erosion
PANO - A national workshop held on May 25 in Quang Nam province’s Hoi An city reviewed the outcomes of three scientific studies conducted under the auspices of the European Union (EU) and France.
Themed “Studies on erosion process and measures for protecting Hoi An beach and the lower Mekong Delta coastal zones”, the workshop looked into the coastal erosion in the three provinces of Ca Mau, Tien Giang and Quang Nam.
The studies, carried out by the Southern Institute of Water Resources Research, the Central Region College of Technology, Economics and Water Resources and the French Agency for Development (AFD), pointed out causes of coastal erosion which has been badly affecting economies in the Central and Mekong Delta regions and locals’ livelihood. Based on erosion-causing mechanism, researchers proposed measures to sustainably protect coastal areas from erosion and to integratedly managing those areas.
As a result, a coastal erosion prevention program will be conducted with a EUR-87-million support from the EU and France. Accordingly, sea dykes will be built beside reviving mangrove, and improving capability to boost sustainable development and environmental management in coastal areas.
