Processed clams from Ben Tre Province in the Mekong Delta have received the Marine Sterwardship Council (MSC) certification for sustainable fishing from a Danish organization.

The certification, based on three criteria - sustainable fish stocks, minimizing environmental impact, and effective management - is the first for any aquatic produce in Southeast Asia.

A representative of Ben Tre Province'sseafood processing industry said the MSC certification would boost the acceptability of the province’s clam products in world markets.

In Ben Tre, clam fishing is done mainly in the districts of Thanh Phu, Ba Tri, and Binh Dai. The province’s coastal areas are estimated to have clam reserves of 30,000 – 40,000 tons while the annual harvest is 20,000 tons.
