The Vietnam Railway Corporation (VRC) has mapped out a project to build a north-south express railway at an estimated cost of nearly 33 billion USD.
The project was introduced at a seminar held in Hanoi on December 10 by VRC and the Japan Overseas Rolling Stock Association (Jorsa).
The 1,600-km railway, which will allow trains to run at 300-350 km per hour, will be linked with railroads of other countries.
Under the project, the tracks from Hanoi to central Vinh city and from central Nha Trang city to Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam will be built during the 2010-2015 period.
From 2015-2020, the construction will begin on the routes between Vinh and Nha Trang and between Hanoi and the northern mountainous provinces of Lao Cai and Lang Son.
