According to the tournament’s regulations, the top three participants automatically progress to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
However, five out of the eight athletes who qualified for the competition’s final round did enough to earn a place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics thanks to their team’s strong results.
Therefore, Thanh Tung automatically booked his place in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, despite not having yet competed in the finals.
Earlier, Vietnamese swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang also achieved an A-Olympic standard time in the men's 800 meters freestyle with a time of seven minutes 52.74 seconds. As a result, Huy Hoang becomes the first Vietnamese athlete to be confirmed as a competitor at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
