Military contingent wins big at Tien Phong Marathon 2020
PANO - The military delegation won 7 medals at the 2020 Tien Phong Marathon tournament, including five golds, one silver and one bronze. It took place in Ly Son island district, Quang Ngai province on July 5 with the participation of nearly 2,000 Vietnamese and international professional and amateur runners.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Mr. Le Xuan Son, Editor-in-Chief of the Tien Phong Newspaper, head of the tournament’s organizing panel, said that the tourney was not only a sport event, but also an activity to popularize the image of Ly Son Island district and Quang Ngai province. More importantly it conveyed a meaningful message on protection of seas and islands, Son stressed.

The military contingent’s outstanding results at the tourney exceeded their set targets of just two gold medals.
Professional runner Nguyen Van Lai was the first gold medal winner for the military contingent. He finished first in the professional men’s 21km event with 1 hour 17 minutes and 32 seconds, followed by Pham Tien San and Nguyen Van Binh, both from the Bac Giang team.
At the professional men’s 10km event, runner Do Quoc Luat from the military contingent came first with 32’16’’, followed by his teammate Trinh Quoc Luong (33’04’’). The military contingent also won a gold in male team’s 10km event.
Another gold medal for the military contingent was won by runner Nguyen Quoc Anh in the young men’s 10km event when finishing the run at 33 minutes and 00 second. Anh was followed by Le Tien Long from the Ha Tinh team with a time of 33’19’’ and teammate Nguyen Dang Dong with a time of 33’38’’. With their positive results, Nguyen Quoc Anh and Nguyen Dang Dong greatly contributed to the military contingent’s fifth gold medal in the young male team’s 10km event.
At the awarding ceremony, Duong Duc Thuy, Head of the Athletics Department under the General Department of Sports and Physical Training and Head of Referee Observers at the 2020 Tien Phong Marathon Tournament highlighted the accomplishments of the military contingent, attributing it to coach Nguyen Tuan Viet’s wise tactics.
Thuy hopes to see the return of female runners of the military contingent at the next tournament.
