Vietnam’s sitting tug of war recognized by UNESCO
PANO - The sitting tug-of-war at Tran Vu temple in Thach Ban ward, Long Bien district, Hanoi, has been officially recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO.
The recognition was announced at the opening ceremony of the Tran Vu temple Festival held on April 7 or the third day of the third lunar month.

An array of other activities included in the event, such as an offering ritual, and a title “Meritorious Artisan” presented to Nguyen Van Se, who has made efforts in maintaining and popularizing the game among local residents.
After that, the participants, divided into three teams, took part in the game, which symbolizes the desire of farmers for bumper crops and favorable weather conditions.
As scheduled, in mid-April, a Vietnamese delegation will visit the Republic of Korea and join a juldarigi (Korean tug of war) game with local people.
