UNESCO recognizes Xoe Thai as intangible cultural heritage of humanity
PANO - On December 15, the art of Xoe Thai dance performed by the Thai ethnic group of Vietnam was officially recognized as the representative of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO.

The recognition was unveiled during the 16th session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which is taking place from December 13 to December 18.
According to the Intergovernmental Committee, Xoe Thai has successfully met all five criteria set forth by UNESCO along with 35 other nominations.
In the Thai language, "xoe" means dance with movements symbolizing human activities in rituals, cultural activities, life, and labor. It is a unique type of traditional dance and plays a significant role in the daily life of the Thai ethnic communities residing in the northwestern part of Vietnam, especially in the provinces of Yen Bai, Lai Chau, Son La, and Dien Bien. It is performed during various community activities, from festivals to funeral rituals.

The nomination of Xoe Thai ensures the popularization of the folk dance and raises the community’s awareness of the significance of intangible cultural heritage. It also helps promote measures to preserve the heritage and affirms the international community’s appreciation of Vietnamese cultural values.
