Young pianist Luu Hong Quang has recently won the second prize of the annual Val Tidone International Music Competitions in the Italian city of Piacenza. He is a new hope for Vietnam’s piano.

Young pianist Luu Hong Quang was awarded second prize for gaining 90 points out of a 100 (no contestant received the top prize for 95 points or more).

Accordionist Tran Thi Thu Huong won the fourth prize, while talented young pianist Luu Duc Anh was awarded a congratulatory certificate.

In January 2006, Quang won a special prize at the Frederick Chopin International Piano Competition in Japan, while in June 2006, he won third prize at the Val Tidone International Music Competitions for the 16 – to 17-year-olds category.

Together with his brother, Duc Anh, Quang began learning the piano at six. Their father, Luu Quang Minh, is a teacher at the Ha Noi Conservatory of Music. Anh won the second prize at the Autumn National Music Contest last year.

Earlier, Quang won a full one-year scholarship to study at the Australia International Conservatorium of Music.

Luu Hong Quang now is the second year student of the Australia International Conservatorium of Music (AICM). He is the only special case as he won a full one year scholarship to the AICM when he was second student of the intermediate level of the Hanoi Conservatory and the 10th grader of Tran Phu secondary school.

However, that is the scholarship for piano course while he had to pay for secondary school free. Luckily, Quang was awarded another scholarship to complete secondary school from the AICM after he performed 60 minutes impressively to the AICM directory board.

AICM director agreed to be Quang’s supervisor and that’s a great honour for him as Professor Kyunghee Lee is a very prestigious lecturer. Over the past ten years, she has supervised for only one student.

During the two years of study, Quang was given chances to join tens of performances. He is a young talent and a new hope for the art of piano of Vietnam.
