Hanoi city is working with the Department of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and will submit to responsible agencies in September requests approval of a project to upgrade Son Tay ancient citadel worth 10 billion VND.
Earlier, in February 2009, Hanoi City People’s Committee decided to upgrade the Son Tay ancient citadel to mark the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long Hanoi.
Son Tay ancient citadel is a military architectural work which was built in 1822 under the Nguyen dynasty to defend the western gateway to the city of Thang Long (Hanoi). Being situated in the center of Son Tay town, about 60km from Hanoi, the citadel has four gates.
The citadel is surrounded by a 3m deep, 20m wide moat. Each corner of the citadel was armed with a cannon.
Due to time and the effects of war, parts of the ancient wall were destroyed. There is a need for measures to preserve and restore this historical relic.
