Representatives from the People’s Committees of Huong Hoa and Sepon districts, the Quang Tri provincial Border Guard Command, authorities and people of the two villages attended the event.

The two villages started their twinning ties in April 2009, committing themselves to observing Vietnam - Laos land border regulations, laws of each country, and customs of local ethnic minority groups.

Over the past 15 years, the two sides have strengthened their relations. The party committees and authorities of the two villages have closely coordinated to disseminate information about legal documents on border, border management, and cooperation agreements signed by Quang Tri and Savannakhet provinces, thus raising locals’ awareness of and responsibility for each country’s independence, territorial integrity, sovereignty, and national border building and defense.

Attentively, villagers have actively cooperated to prevent and fight crimes, maintain local political security, social order and safety. In addition, they have been voluntarily committed to managing and protecting border markers, and joining patrols by border guard forces of Quang Tri and Savannakhet provinces, among others.

Moreover, people of the two villages have provided each other with seedings and breeding animals, shared experience in production, disease prevention, application of technological and scientific advances to production, and assisted each other in product consumption. Thanks to the sharing of economic development models, many households have escaped poverty and been well-off.

Addressing the meeting, Vice Chairman of the Huong Hoa district People’s Committee Pham Trong Ho acknowledged and highly praised the outcomes of the twinning ties. He hoped that the two villages would continue to observe signed regulations, enhance information dissemination, and develop creative models to help each other in hunger elimination, poverty reduction, and economic development.

The Vietnamese official added that the two sides should yearly review their coordination, pro-actively fight against hostile forces who take advantage of religious and ethnic affairs to separate the solidarity between the two villages in particular and the two countries in general.

On the occasion, the people’s committees of the two districts and the Quang Tri provincial Border Guard Command presented certificates of merit to collectives and individuals with outstanding performance in the twinning work. The People’s Committee of Tan Long commune and Thuan Border Post under the Quang Tri provincial Border Guard Command gave gifts to local disadvantaged families.
