In an interview with Japan's Nikkei published on June 9, Mahathir said the trade pact should take into consideration development levels of various countries.

Weaker economies must be given a chance to protect their products, he added.

Mahathir did not reject the significance of agreements like the CPTPP and did not say whether he would consider withdrawing from the trade pact, Nikkei reported.

The PM said his government "must review all agreements" the country got involved under the previous administration, including infrastructure, trade and security pacts.

The 92-year-old PM took office last month, committing to reducing national debt and reviewing big projects approved by his predecessor.
