At the meeting, more than 80 senior officials on security and maritime cooperation from 27 ARF members exchanged views on maritime security in the region, including results of cooperation as well as arising challenges. They reviewed the operation of the mechanism, shared information about national and regional policies and measures and discussed topics related to maritime security, environment and sustainable development, and more.

Overview of the event

Delegates at the meeting also listened to reports on the implementation of activities in the mid-sessional year, including the conference on the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS 1982) and other legal documents to solve arising maritime challenges.

The ISM-MS is a regular meeting of the ARF held to review the situation of maritime security and other ARF cooperation activities while proposing initiatives for the new period. The meeting concludes on March 15.

Established in 1994, the ARF aims at promoting dialogues on political and security issues among members to maintain peace, and stability and build confidence among countries in the region. At present, the ARF consists of 27 members. Vietnam, the EU and Australia are now co-organizers of inter-sessional activities on maritime security of the ARF in the 2018-2020 term.
