The sixth ASEAN amateur golf tournament opened in Cairo on April 12, with the participation of diplomats from 8 regional countries, and Egyptian Government officials and businessmen.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador Dao Thanh Chung said the event, co-hosted by the embassies of Vietnam and Brunei, also aimed at raising funds for charity.

Funds collected via an auction of items unique to participating ASEAN nations and gifts from sponsors will be spent on building a school library in a poor Egyptian area.

Last year, the annual event raised nearly 10,000 USD in support of native families of railway crash victims in November 2012.

As rotating Chairman of the ASEAN Committee in Cairo (ACC), the Vietnamese embassy recently made arrangements to take representatives of ACC member nations to Egyptian cultural, educational and trade establishments in order to bolster ties between ASEAN and Egypt.

In the coming months, a host of community activities involving ASEAN officials and students living in the host country will also be held.
