Streets in the city are no longer crowded because local people have been observing social distancing amid COVID-19. This enables the dipterocarpus retusus flowers to freely cover the roads.

Dipterocarpus retusus flowers are in full bloom in April. These flowers have two petals which turn brownish yellow when they dry. They often spin like a pinwheel when the wind blows before landing and carpeting the roads.

Whenever a car crosses the street, the flower petals are swept into a swirl of color, forming a unique atmosphere that distinguishes Ho Chi Minh City from others.

According to Nguyen Thi Dung, a 56-year-old local resident, when they were young, she and her friends waited for dipterocarpus retusus season to make pinwheels or release the flowers in the water. “Although I am old, I do love this flower season because when flowers fall, the city looks peaceful,” Dung said.

Below are photos of these unique flowers.
