PANO - Not only well-known for the Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark, the charming terraced rice fields, or the breathtaking mountain roads, Ha Giang is also famous for the mysterious and irresistible beauty of Noong Lake. The lake has long been known as the “heavenly land” of the province and a tourist attraction.

Noong Lake, a natural body of water in Phu Linh commune, Vi Xuyen district, Ha Giang province, around 23km from the city of Ha Giang, is well-known for its floating trees.

No one knows for sure how old Noong Lake is, except for the fact that it was formed a long, long time ago, covering a vast area of Noong 1 and Noong 2 hamlets. In the rainy season, the water surface may reach 80ha with a depth of 10m, while in the dry season the water surface is only 20ha and the water is only 2m deep. Here, local people raise fish and plant vegetables.

The lake is surrounded by a 700ha primeval forest, which is considered to be one of the unique charms of Vietnam. The most special part of the scenery is the floating forest on the lake, especially in the rainy season, bringing a sense of grandeur to the scenery. Many of the trees are alive while others are dead and water logged in the midst of the lake, making it like no other place.

Water comes to Noong Lake via underground streams, running through mountains and hills, and three underground water pools connected with the Lo River. Therefore, in the rainy season, water from the Lo River runs into the lake, bringing schools of fish. The fish here are abundant and diverse as the lake never runs dry. The lake is the habitat of special species of fish that can be found nowhere else.
