The event was co-hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s Vietnam Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Climate Change (IMHEN) and the UNESCO Office in Vietnam.

In her opening speech, IMHEN Deputy Director Assoc. Prof., Dr. Huynh Thi Lan Huong said thanks to active involvement of member states, the first publication on hydrological analysis was published to share data, knowledge and experience in water management and water science research.

The event is expected to share studies and experience in the second publication on the operation of water reservoirs towards prevention and mitigation of water-related disasters, water scarcity and degradation in water quality. It also aims to expand cooperation within the international scientific community to thoroughly deal with issues regarding hydrology and water resources security, she said.

Dr. Daisuke Nohara from the Japan Meteorological Research Institute said water reservoirs in Japan are built mostly for agriculture, industry, daily use and flooding reduction.

He added that in the near future, Japan will upgrade dykes to expand the capacity of water reservoirs, as well as work closely with managers and relevant units to make the best use of reservoirs for sustainable socio-economic development.

Participants at the event also looked into hydrological training activities and suggested ideas to the third publication featuring flood and drought forecasting, and the impacts of climate change on water resources in the coming time, among others.
