National program on reducing greenhouse gas emissions approved
PANO – The Prime Minister has approved a national program on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+) by 2030.

Accordingly, by 2020, REDD+ activities are expected to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase its land under forest cover to 42%, and afforest 14.4 million hectares of land. In the 2021-2030 period, the program will focus on maintaining the areas of natural forest and increase the natural forest coverage to 45%, making contributions to realizing Vietnam’s commitment at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change to reduce the total greenhouse gas emissions by 8%.
The program will be carried out across the country from now till 2030 with priority given to hot spots of deforestation and forest degradation, localities strongly affected by climate change, and areas with potential forest carbon stocks.
