The project is scheduled to be operational in early 2017 to provide both civil and military ATC services, hence facilitating the economic and tourism development of not only Thanh Hoa province but also the whole northern central region.

Tho Xuan Airport, formerly known as Sao Vang Airport, is located in Sao Vang town, Tho Xuan district, 45 kilometers away from Thanh Hoa capital city.

The airport looks to expand its capacity to 2.5 million passengers per year and handle 27,000 tons of goods by 2030.
