For a chemical soldier, wearing a set of protective equipment is indispensable to ensure safety against deadly chemical agents. Therefore, the regulations of the “Safe Environment” event clearly stipulate the wearing of skin protection equipment and gas masks during the contest. In the “Safe Environment” event, apart from muscle strength, athletes must have exceptionally good breathing and a good circulatory system able to carry meager amount of oxygen in the air through the thick filter of the gas mask to the lungs to feed the body. To achieve this ability, troops must undergo intensive training for months. In the picture: Athletes are warming up before performing heavy exercises.
Chemical reconnaissance is the first task that chemical troops have to perform in the “Safe Environment” event. With time pressure, athletes are required to think fast and act skillfully and accurately. Any extra moves can result in penalty. Thus, the coach must regularly supervise the athletes during training.
While performing missions, a chemical soldier has to bring along a small lab with the most necessary equipment. During the competition, if the athletes drop any equipment, penalty applies. Apart from the feet, no other parts of the body are allowed to touch the reconnaissance target.
Like other sports, time calculation is important. Based on the time calculation, the coaching board makes more accurate assessment of each individual’s performance, from which they could develop suitable training and competitive tactics for the contingent.
Weapons and equipment used in the “Safe Environment” event are developed and manufactured by the host China; therefore, the Vietnamese contingent did not have any specific and in-depth documents about them. Right after receiving the weapons and equipment, the contingent’s technical experts quickly learn their techno-tactical features, make comparison with the equipment used in Vietnam, and discuss optimal use of them with the athletes. Both coaches and athletes take advantage of each minute on the training ground to master the newly-provided equipment for the radiation reconnaissance – the second task of the event.
Detecting radioactive sources hidden on a truck is a task for the chemical troops. The task is difficult because radioactive sources, from different materials, are placed at different positions on the truck, sending high or low signal strength. Athletes not only refer to the indicators given by the reconnaissance device, but also have to rely on their own experience and knowledge to determine the right radiation source.
To complete the task of radioactive source detection, chemical soldiers have to use different senses: eyes to observe the tip, ears to listen to signal, and hands to move the tip quickly and accurately.
The third task the three-member chemical crew has to take is decontamination. The task requires the smooth coordination of all crew-members to use a decontamination vehicle.
Vietnamese troops are practicing hard to master this big-size decontamination vehicle used in this year’s “Safe Environment” event.
Two chemical troops of the Vietnamese Chemical Contingent are decontaminating the targets – two white steel plates sprayed with a special colored solution. The decontamination is complete when the marker traces vanish.
Chemical troops are introduced to the structure and features of the QBZ-95 rifle, which will be used in the “Safe Environment” event.

Vietnamese chemical troops train on desert

PANO - The Vietnamese Chemical Contingent is taking advantage of their remaining time before the “Safe Environment” event of the Army Games 2021 starts to train and get used to weapons and equipment.

Training at Korla military base in Xinjiang, China, which is situated in Taklamakan Desert, the chemical troops have to familiarize themselves with the local harsh weather with dry and oxygen-deficient air. Despite weather-caused difficulties, the Vietnamese athletes are determined to achieve the best possible results at the upcoming event.
