There are four teams corresponding to the four “giap”- an ancient administrative unit in the village. Each team prepares items to make a fire, including straw, tinder, bamboo sticks, and others.
Participating teams have to fetch water, make a fire and cook the rice. Children will take charge of taking water from the village’s well.
Four young men make a fire from straw. They pull on the two ends of a bamboo stick clamped against straw tinder, creating friction to make a fire. Then they blow on the straw as soon as there is smoke.
After making a big fire, members quickly come back to their team’s area.
When the fire and water are fully prepared, female members boil the water first.
Young men husk the rice. Their movements must be very fast and extremely skillful so that the rice grains do not break.
Next, the rice is screened to eliminate the rice husks and grit.
The whole competition takes place within an hour.
The rice is cooked in the pots. When the rice pot runs out of water, the teams will hide the rice pot in piles of straw.
The jury checks the performance of participating teams.
Rice pots are brought to the communal house to offer to Gods and be scored.
Rice pots are hidden in ash from straw.
However, each rice grain is white and well cooked.
The winning team features the most white, soft and delicious rice.

Rice cooking contest in Thi Cam village

PANO - On January 29 (the 8th day of the lunar New Year), locals in Thi Cam village (Xuan Phuong ward, Nam Tu Liem district, Hanoi) joined together at the village’s communal house to celebrate their traditional rice cooking contest.

This annual custom aims to pay tribute to General Phan Tay Nhac under the reign of the 18th Hung King with meritorious services to the national construction.

In 2021, the rice cooking contest in Thi Cam village was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage.
