Nguyen Van Dong, HQ 261 captain set tasks of the patrol and exercise for officers and sailors on his ship on May 7th at Da Nang Military Port. HQ 261 was the Vietnamese flag ship in this exercise.
In the formation of the patrol, HQ 263 is always 0.3 nautical miles behind HQ 261.
As the exercise started on May 9th after 24 hours of patrolling, HQ 261 released a rescue target with orange smoke. The Chinese flag ship also released a rescue target with white smoke. The two ships were about two nautical miles far from each other.
After the two ships released the rescue targets, they and their member ships turn around to search for and rescue the target.

HQ 261 approached and picked up the target in about 20 minutes. The target was hard to recognise as it was small and floated in the wind and sea waves.
HQ 261 sent a boat to return the rescue target to the Chinese ship.
Vietnamese and Chinese boat exchanged the rescue target. The combined patrol and exercise finished successfully.

Vietnamese and Chinese navies launch first search and rescue exercise

PANO – The first search and rescue exercise, coordinated by the navies of Vietnamese People’s Army and Chinese People’s Liberation Army was recently conducted successfully.

The exercise took place on May 9th in the waters of the Bac Bo (Tonkin) Gulf within the framework of the 9^th Combine Patrol of the two navies.

The Vietnamese and Chinese navies signed the Memorandum of Understanding on conducting combined patrols in the water of the Bac Bo Gulf on October 26^th, 2005.

The VPA Naval vessels of HQ 261 and HQ 263 participated in the patrol with two PLA Naval vessels.

The combined patrols and exercise are to strengthen the mutual trust and understanding between the two navies.
